Collaging: Making Magazines Into Art

collaging

If you’re anything like me, a magazine is something more than just a way to pass the time. Weather its Vogue, Architectural Digest or even the REI catalog (Phoebe- that one’s for you), magazines are a way for me to find inspiration and new ideas. Personally, I’ve always got my hands on the latest issues of Vogue and Departures. The mix of fashion, art and articles keep me up to date and expose me to new ideas. After you’re done with a magazine, you probably throw it away (or hopefully recycle it-that one’s for you too Phoebe) but what if you took the pages that inspired you and made them into art? Here’s an inside look at my magazine collage mural:

I started this mural by going through magazines and ripping out every page that caught my eye. I took this project as a vision board of sorts, so I collected empowering quotes, amazing fashion advertisements and photos of past vacation spots.

After I cut out as many items as I could find, I arranged and hot glued them onto a huge canvas I got at the local craft store on sale. I also added cute tags from clothes, letters from my family and postcards I had picked up during travels. For some added pop of texture, I finished off the mural with some iridescent confetti and patterned washi tape.

I love how this turned out. I’ve made little collages to give out to friends as well after I was finally finished with this bad boy! I think it’s a great way to take the things that inspire you in print magazines and turn it into art on your wall. So next time you’re done with a magazine, find a blank canvas and get creative. Happy crafting!
